The Betheye E.P. Johnson Memorial Scholarship was created to build a legacy. Mrs. Johnson was an educator for those who were underserved in her community. Children who would not have been afforded the opportunity to start their education were blessed by her generosity. Some of the children that attended her school were considered slow learners, had been diagnosed with an intellectual delay or faced other socioeconomic issues. Mrs. Johnson taught them to not allow the limitation of a label to hinder them from succeeding. The students that attended her school were well-rounded in education and social skills. Mrs. Johnson’s school was designed to give students a good early foundation. The school was dedicated to grades K-5. All of the students that attended her school went on to finish high school and many of them entered college, served in the Military, or learned a valuable trade. Mrs. Johnson was a graduate of Howard University with a degree in Communications and a minor in Journalism. Mrs. Johnson was also a talented painter and artist. She passed away tragically from a brain injury in 2014. Her legacy of empowering young people continues to live on.
Nursing is a noble and honorable profession. It was founded on the premise of protecting, improving, and promoting health across the age spectrum. Nursing combines work that is rich in tradition yet continues to evolve daily. Nurses are known as the cornerstone of healthcare practices today. We want to foster the commitment to the nursing profession with a scholarship specifically for young women who have the desire to enter the field of nursing. We especially want to help young women who are not able to afford the expense of attending nursing school.
